Your outdoorliving space is your refuge. It’s that part of your home where you can escape
the everyday pressures and find comfort, tranquility, and beauty around you.
Whether you’ve already envisioned your dream deck or are not sure where to
start, the right deck can add value to your property as well as enjoyment. Here
are some deck design trends to get you started.
Composite Decks
New
styles and product lines are emerging every year as composite decks gain
popularity. These decks tend to cost a little more than treated lumber, but
have other benefits such as low maintenance. These decks, which resemble real
wood, come in a variety of colors. Their hidden fastener systems create a
smooth-looking appearance and can be inlaid with patterns and designs in your
deck boards for eye-catching appeal.
Deck Waterproofing
With
busy lifestyles, the time for scrubbing and oiling a large wooden deck or
applying general deck maintenance, are quickly disappearing. Most deck designs
contain a space for drainage and expansion under the deck boards, but without
proper maintenance, rot can quickly set in. A proper underlayment system can
redirect water between the boards and keep the porch area below dry and usable.
Outdoor Lighting
While
outdoor lighting is not new, more people are choosing to add either
solar-powered deck lights or low-voltage lighting systems into their deck
structure for security and night-time ambiance. The placement could include
stairs, railing or post-mounted applications. Another option is garden lights
to shed a glow on the deck surface.
Water Features
From
koi ponds to landscaped garden designs featuring fountains and waterfalls,
water elements can bring serenity and beauty to your outdoor space. When planning
water features near your deck, remember that wood products such as cedar and
spruce may not hold up as well as composite products when it comes to moisture
exposure. Also, be sure to keep the water clean and fresh flowing with a
quality water pump to avoid attracting bugs.
Outdoor Furniture
Once
your dream deck has been built or assembled, you’re ready to employ your design
skills to create a space that’s creative, inviting and functional. From the
traditional patio sets to comfortable, weather-proof couches and/or bistro
tables, you can use your imagination to create an extension of your indoor
space for the everyday or entertaining.
